Chapter Eighteen

Gideon

Gideon’s fingers lingered on the side of his perspiring glass, the chilled water cold against his fingertips. While he’d donned his best professional mask, he was seething internally.

Not only had Victor been abrasive to Rona, but he’d stared at her like she was a piece of meat, ripe for the tasting. Everything within him was a hair’s breadth away from decking Victor and had been since the human had first laid eyes on Rona.

Swallowing the thought, Gideon cocked his head. “What else do you need?”

“Word is that you work in munitions.”

“I have in ages past, yes.” Gideon’s forehead wrinkled in concentration. “What are you looking for?”

“Custom Glock 9mm rounds.” Victor searched Gideon’s eyes. “We need hollow point rounds outfitted with the same ultraviolet compound.”

Gideon couldn’t hide the brief look of surprise that whispered across his features. Though Rona had remained silent beside him, such a weapon could easily kill a vampire from a distance, without the vampire ever knowing they were being targeted.

Clearing his throat, Gideon asked, “You’re asking for a bullet filled with ultraviolet shrapnel within the cartridge case?”

“I assure you—“ Victor narrowed his eyes ”—I know exactly what I’m asking for. The only question is can you do it?”

“How many clips are we talking?”

“Depends. If we like the way they shoot, a lot.”

Gideon dragged in a breath to steel his nerves, not chancing a glance at the beauty beside him. “I’ll have to investigate the rounds and draw designs before I can give you an estimate. We can meet again in a month to discuss the secondary requirements.”

Victor shook his head. “Fine.”

Nodding, Gideon offered Curtis a friendly smile as he delivered their sodas, and silence fell over the table. Gideon took a liberal drink to wash away the sour taste in his mouth, and though Rona mirrored the action, her sip was barely enough to diminish the water level.

It was then that Victor’s discerning gaze darted back to Rona, but this time, there was no seduction behind his eyes, only suspicion.

Warning lights flashed in Gideon’s mind as he observed the other man. Victor’s stillness prompted Jay’s attention, and suddenly, Jay was doing the same thing. Inconspicuously, Victor grabbed something from his pocket as his harsh gaze resettled on Rona.

That was when all hell broke loose.

Victor’s hand clenched around the small black device in his hand a moment before Rona stiffened. Clutching at her ears, a cry of unimaginable pain escaped from her lips as her entire body paralyzed under the invisible attack.

That was all Victor needed. In a flash, he swiftly pulled a dagger—one of the three Gideon had made two years ago—from the holster at his hip and lunged forward. Intent on the vulnerable vampire, his knifed hand aimed for Rona’s head.

Gideon didn’t think twice; he shot to his feet and was gripping Victor’s wrists with unimaginable might. Spurred onward by adrenaline and a blistering need to protect her, Gideon stalled the attack on the vampire who was writhing in duress. Victor’s entire focus was fixated
